Changes to .hgignore (was: Re: dirstate and .hgignore)

Looking through old tagged mails I found this unsolved problem:

We have the "syntax: foo" statement for a long time now, so we could
issue a warning if it is not used. Then the default would not
matter. Later the default can be changed then.

Or is it too late now? But we're still pre-1.0, so this might be our
last chance.
