Let me give a less terse explanation:
Without patch automatic documentation/help update clobbers the
unnamed register, so it is better to delete without trace into
the so-called "black hole" register.
g: prefixing global vars is cosmetic but is meant to improve
readability and ease further work on the plugin.
I've used this for a few months now w/o prob.
