version.py - is it possible to relicense it to BSD?

Thomas, Mercurial crew,
First of all I'd like to say big "Thank You" for Mercurial -- we use it
in SymPy [1] project.
Recently an issue arose about how to store version info in development
installs of SymPy [2], and the first thing that comes to mind is to
mimic mercurial/version.py itself.
However SymPy is BSD licensed, and Mercurial is GPL licensed, so we just
can't include version.py as is in our sources.
So here goes the question:
Is it possible for SymPy project to get a copy of mercurial/version.py
under BSD license?
We all respect copyright and authorship, and also ones choice of
license, so if this is not possible - it would be ok.
But if it would be possible, it would make life a bit easier for SymPy
users and developers.
Thanks beforehand.
