[PATCH 0 of 5] Several changes for run-tests.py

That is a great goal! I've pushed the first three patches (91fe769ac84e,
ce07defe7d9f, and 31fdb04cb5e8).

I stopped when I met the patches that deal with coverage -- I don't have
the coverage package installed and my Debian unstable only carries
version 3.2 when run-tests want 3.3. Perhaps someone who has tries to
run the tests with the coverage option can push those patches?
