Large clone chewing CPU

I'm cloning a 553 mebibyte repository with 1468 changes and many binary
files.  It's being cloned over a 1.5mbit connection, so I don't expect
it to be especially speedy, but there are long periods of time in which
that connection seems largely idle.

During those periods, the hg process on the source box seems to largely
be doing a lot of mmaps and munmaps interspersed with writes of
seemingly repetititve garbage to stdout.  I'm cloning over an ssh
connection.

The writes always occur in pairs, one of 1024 bytes, and another of
3096.

What's going on?  Is there a way to minimize this behavior?
