Yes, but gcc exists before any port.
I have no access to lots of architectures supported by Debian (hppa,
mips, s390, ...) so I cannot manually build the first release of hg.
  By the way, this is not really a problem for me, as I can patch the
sources before releasing a package so that the version is not
dynamically guessed. Then autobuilders will be fine.
  But I think you should take care that building hg from released
tarball takes the correct version.
