Storing history outside repository?

Hi all,

Had a quick scan of the manpage and couldn't see anything about this.

Is it possible to change the location of the .hg directory to be outside the 
tree of managed files?  This would be useful for a project I'm looking at 
applying hg within, and seems like it might be of benefit to others too.

I vaguely remember git being able to do this, but couldn't say for sure.
