If you want to distribute e.g. tarballs of your work, you need this
information in a format independend of the used SCM, too. So just
use a separate tool for this job.

I remember that there were more discussions, but I can't find them
now. Maybe they happened on IRC (and we don't have public IRC logs,
which I consider a good thing).
