I tend to think that suggesting to your users to use an upgraded 
mercurial package would be a good solution, as mercurial is not a key 
component of the system (not like, say, suggesting to upgrade libgtk).

That's very unfortunate, but at least the current location seems the 
most sensible to me. :)

As for the kernel project, you should try to make your code upstream, so 
when those changes occur the breakage will be fixed at the same time.
