If you feel typing longer messages in the command line is a problem (I
agree), do not use the '-m' option. It will open up an editor for you
to type in the long messages. I do that when I want to add a lot more
detail than that can be typed comfortably on the prompt with
formatting.
The other details like the files modified, the time, revision etc are
all SCM details and mercurial does store them. Using the '--template'
option, you can customize the output (details and format) of various
commands.
