Because I know the toolkit very well is the main reason.
I've been wanting to develop this application for a long time but never
had the time to do it. The biggest unknown being the time needed to
understand and port the graphing algorithm.
I eventually stumbled on Tristan's mail where he posted the complete
algorithm. That got me started and the first useable version took
me less than a day to develop.

Hum, at least not initially. But I'll gladly include any patches improving 
portability.

and the author seemed to share your view about the painfull process of
installing pygtk ;)
