There is something for this in http://hg.intevation.org/tmp/default-branch/
(from my mq queue, so I'll rebase it as appropriate)

I didn't have time to advocate for it during the last weeks, but I'm
currently catching up.

Matt, is this okay for -stable? Without that the unnamed branch
really is unusable.
