I simply have no idea at all about how perforce mappings or
subversion externals work, so I cannot compare.
If it helps, the principle behind the forest extension is very
similar to Arch's configurations or Robert Collins' config.

Regarding the extension documentation: to me, starting by reading
the output of 'hg help forest' (patches to improve it welcome) and
then building a toy forest and playing with it for 10 minutes seems
the best way to learn how to use this extension.
The attached script creates such a toy forest.
