I use mercurial to manage configuration files on my servers and I often 
do things like:

# su smithm -c "hg up"

...so the risk exists that one day I will make a similar mistake. Would 
it make sense for Mercurial to check the user which I am running as 
against the ownership of (say) .hg and refuse to work if I am not runing 
as that user?

Many applications, particularly editors, display warnings when run as 
root, because of the dangers involved.
