being a Mercurial newbie myself, I can't help you much, but for some more 
hints, you could look at the unofficial manual available at 
<http://hgbook.red-bean.com/hgbook.pdf>. It's a work in progress, but it 
has a chapter 8 dealing with branching that also has some named branch 
examples.

There are currently some discussions about strange effects when merging 
two named branches on the mailinglist, so in your case I would consider to 
subscribe to the list.
