Sharing files/directories (view mapping, externals, forest, ...)

Hello,

does mercurial have a feature like mapping in perforce or externals in subversion? I came across the forest extension, but its documentation is quite brief. How does forest relate to the said features of perforce/subversion? Is it possible to use only part of a repository (deep link to a directory or even a single file)? Can it be mapped to any location in a working copy?
