Need a strategy to maintain multiple repositories together

Hello, everyone.

I'm still new to Mercurial, coming from Subversion. A problem I had is that
one of my repositories became huge and some tools were very slow with that
kind of volume. Now I have split my one big Subversion repository into a
bunch of smaller Mercurial repositories. Now I find myself writing scripts
to do "hg st" on each one to see which ones I need to commit. It's starting
to feel unwieldy.

Any suggestions for how to deal with this? Should I combine the repositories
because hg tool performance is much better? Would I have to lose history to
do that?
