In my opinion, it is more useful to improve TortoiseHG, or any other
graphical client, than
to start supporting a new file manager (I don't think that thunar is
wildly popular, especially
compared to nautilus or the file manager from kde).
There are probably plenty of work to do in TortoiseHG to occupy your
summer, maybe you
can get some input from TK Soh or Steve Borho to help you with your application.
