Feature request: enable "fetch" by default

Agreed. A good introduction should show how the VCS really works, using 
basic operations, and describe how these operations can be put together 
to support different goals; and then explain that there are shortcuts 
for some very common sequences of operations, available to you if and 
when they make sense.
