.hg directory has eclipsed 3GB - how to deal with huge manifest?

Wait, are you saying that there is enough overhead per commit that
those sizes are not out of line?
I still haven't seen a message indicating enough about the structure
of the repo to say it isn't some huge (content) commits rather than
just the number of commits... what have I missed?
