FWIW shelve didn't work at all for me a few months back when I tried it. The bundled version with Tortoise works fine, but shelve didn't work on ubuntu 8.10. I think I had the same results as Aardwolf. I may have been using an older version of mercurial, though. I think I later manually upgraded mercurial myself to 1.5.x and then 1.6.x.
