Hi there,
I see you've rediscovered some of MQ's shortcomings!

qsplit and hunk-level refresh have been on the agenda for ages, but no
one has gotten to it. It's possible that nicer ways of doing it also
depend on in-memory patching, which IIRC is waiting for Augie to free
up some time to implement some streaming two-pass patcher. Anyway, we
would definitely welcome you working on that, and I personally would
be happy to provide any guidance you need (though you can probably
find enough guidance on this list and IRC anyway). CrewRepository is a
wiki page that has useful links; you may also want to look at
DeveloperInfo.
(Finally, it would help if you post your replies on emails below the
text you are replying to instead of on top, thus providing a more
linear reading experience to all of us.)
Cheers,
Dirkjan
