Well it's not completely illogical that Mercurial be eliminated if "nobody" in the core Drupal community knows about it.

From my ongoing experience with Bazaar, Git being the front-runner is a good thing. Apart from that, I believe Mercurial would have an easier task in the long run if hg fast-import was completed and shipped with core (maybe even enabled by default, not as an addon) and if hg had a fast-export of its own (rather than a shell script provided by the git folk). Convert is nice but a bit slow, and fast-import/fast-export seems to be fast becoming the linga franca for converting between DVCS.
