Remove not working

I was trying to remove a directory from my repository, so I typed in "hg rm
web/sketchups/" and hit enter.  It echoed back, without giving me any
feedback.  I type in "hg status", but it doesn't show anything.  I attempted
to commit, but I got the message "nothing changed".  I can't figure out what
could be going on.  Any suggestions?
