I have managed to convert the last month of history this way:

hg clone --startrev 17500 svn+ssh:://userame at gcc.gnu.org/svn/gcc/trunk


But I cannot go much farther back than 1 month because every time I try 
I end up having to cancel at some point and that command does not 
survive a "Ctrl+C".
