Very interesting idea.

I would consider adding some size limit, at least as an option (so files
bigger than - say - 20MB or so are not recompressed).  Recompressing
200MB photos-containing-doc can be painful both in terms of time and
memory usage.

PS .epub is yet another popular zip-based format, which can benefit from
the extension.
