It depends entirely on how your mail server is configured. Clearly yours is configured _not_ to require authentication to send mail (indeed, it doesn't even seem to support SMTP authentication). This isn't uncommon; SMTP didn't gain authentication support until several decades after it was in use.

You can likely remove the smtp.username setting as well.
