I can sort of see your point, but in general would have to disagree for
the following reasons.
1) Bugs are part of writing software. When they get squashed is not
important, that they do is.
2) One way or another the news of new releases spreads, especially if
there are compelling features added. This tends to bring in more people
and hence a wider testing environment and the potential for more bug
reports. It is part of the price of success and should be embraced.
3) Many places have policies prohibiting use of pre-production releases,
so people do not get to kick the tires until a production release is made.
4) I have only been using Mercurial for a short time and have found the
community responsive, helpful and welcoming. 'Stealth' release
announcements seem to run counter to that.
