Truncated Commit Description

Dear All,
I am fairly new to mercurial.
I have successfully converted a subversion repository into one for
mercurial (using hg convert), but I have a small problem (on Debian
testing): in the mercurial repository, the comments that I wrote for every
svn commit are truncated after the first line.
I suppose this has to do with nano (the default editor I have been using
to write my own comments when committing). For instance, even under
mercurial, whenever I commit, I need to write my comments as a single long
line in nano, since if I press "return" to start a new line, all the
comments from the second line on are lost (and this is exactly what has
happened to my previous comments on svn after converting to a mercurial
repository).
Does anybody have any idea about how to fix this?
Though mercurial works very well, it is annoying to lose all this info.
I still have the original svn repository which I can reconvert if needed.
Many thanks

Lorenzo
