Changing mercurial commit messages

Hi,
We've got a small (say 350 revisions) but complex (anywhere between 2 and 5
concurrent changes that get merged) mercurial repository. Currently all the
commit messages contain 'Case xxx' in them so that they link up with
FogBugz issues, but we've just moved to JIRA and I want to edit all of
these to be 'XYZ-xyz' for example. We've actually decided not to use
mercurial now, so this repository will no longer have any changes. I just
want to update the history and then leave it alone.
I tried to use the histedit extension but it immediately aborts, saying
that you can't edit history with merges. In your experience, is this a lost
cause? Does anybody know of a way of getting this to work without too much
pain?
Many thanks
James
