When does it make sense to use subrepositories?

The problem I had is that the wiki page only describes how to use them and
that they're "a feature of last resort", but doesn't say when they should be
used. That's left up to trial and error.

I'll edit the page if I can think of a good description for this use case,
but it might be better done by someone who's used subrepos successfully.
