Hello Pietro,
:::: I don't think Greg meant this as a criticism.
Indeed.
As somebody who often seek for help online,
I almost always get confronted with the counter-question
"your question doesn't make sense -- what are you trying to do?"
I used to be annoyed by this pattern, until I started answering questions
myself
and realized that often people asks about attempted solutions rather than
their actual problem.
Until this initial gap it is fixed, communication cannot go on and
the solution cannot be found.
The pattern is so well known and recurrent that it is a kind of FAQ
in meta.stackexchange, and it has a name:
"the X-Y problem"
http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/66377/what-is-the-xy-problem
cheers,
GGhh
