Cannot commit Mercurial 2.3.1-20120908 fro OS X 10.8

I use mercurial on windows - but now trying on Mac from terminal and I am
stuck because I cannot commit.   Any help would be appreciated!

'hg commit'  or 'sudo hg commit' both give the same message  (from TextEdit)

'The document "hg-editor-i40eg.txt" could not be opened. You don't have
permission.'

I am no pro at linux or OS X but I do seem to have rw permission on the
project and the entire .hg directory.  I am not clear where it is trying to
create that file.

Installing Mercurial 2.3.1-20120908 fro OS X 10.8

This package installs the hg executable in /usr/local/bin and the Mercurial
files in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/mercurial.
