As far as I can tell, Mercurial on Windows works somehow even on a CIFS
share, apart from its slow and unreliable operation. It would be thanks to
Mercurial's special work-around for Windows-based file system semantics
when it is used on Windows. If Mercurial runs on Linux, it will always
assume POSIX file system semantics on CIFS. So if the CIFS client driver
in Linux is not so good at emulating a POSIX file system over CIFS, it can
cause some problems for Mercurial.
