100s of thousands of hgtstatus files

We've been using tortoiseHg for a while on a large repo and happened to look
in the .hg directory to find 100s of thousands of hgtstatus files from the
icon overlay system.  In Win7 the directory was barely openable.

Anyone else seeing this behaviour and is the only way to get rid of it to
turn off the icon overlay - we calculated that it must have been writing out
a new file four times a minute for 3 months to get that many.
