100s of thousands of hgtstatus files

I can only speak of THG 2.9.1, and only about a repo of ca. 700MB store size. With this I've never seen the effect you described. Overlays are on and working in the range of expectation (Windows Explorer overlays never worked 100% right for me, no matter what tool it was) and no "hgtstatus" file is observed. There is a "thgstatus" file (which I guess you meant), but I've always seen only one and not many of them, let alone hundreds of thousands.
