Root causing error: abort: error: _ssl.c:503: error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol

Mercurial Support,

When attempting to clone a Mercurial repository in our environment on a Linux SUSE server, the user is receiving error:

abort: error: _ssl.c:503: error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol

The are several online links that discuss this error and they all have different options to resolve this issue, which I've forward to our customer.

In the interim can you please provide any additional information you may have on the root cause and potential resolution of this error?
