If someday Mercurial does fade to irrelevance, I bet you'll be quoted as 
a clear example of why that happened.

The main problem with your reasoning is that Mercurial is not a Ferrari. 
  You may believe it is, but it is not.  It's just another Toyota-clone 
competing in a Toyota market.  When a client goes looking for a Toyota, 
it picks the one which overall offers the best value, has more support 
and the market offers more services.  Therefore it tends to pick 
something else.  Time and again.

And with time, this tendency only gets worse.
