Shaun,
if you want to advise your client for or against using mercurial or any of
the other existing open source version control solutions, you have several
options IMHO:
- check the software yourselves (e.g. by downloading it or watching any of
the many excellent mercurial tutorials that you may find online).
- hire a contractor or a consulting company specialized in version control
tools to do a demo for you
- contact a company such as FogCreek which provides an on site mercurial
based version control solution
This may not match what you are used to in the corporate world but given
how much better the open source version control solutions are nowadays
compared with their closed source counterparts I don't think you can ignore
them.
At my current company I personally championed and led the switch from
ClearCase to mercurial. I believe that it was a very successful switch and
that after the expected adjustment period (which was shorter than we
thought it would be) our productivity and developer satisfaction was much
increased.
Cheers,
Angel
