Status of shallow clones

This page tells that information is outdated, so
I decided to ask here, because I just have to pull
a few clones each about 700Mb in size and not
too happy about it, because connection is
extremely slow.

Am I right that this is the future
https://bitbucket.org/facebook/remotefilelog ?

Or did I miss something and there is some plan
B in development? Any any case, what would
you recommend?
