Why did "hg push", push my local bookmark to remote?

I haven't used TortoiseHg or any other UI for mercurial (or even Git) 
since my limited experience with them was that, there either wasn't a 
decent usable GUI for *nix OS or they lacked in features. This was 
around 7 years back. I'll checkout TortoiseHg. Thanks!
