Why did "hg push", push my local bookmark to remote?

When forced to use git by other projects some years back, I 'found'
TortoiseHg was an ideal solution since it DID work on both windows and
linux. I still haven't found an alternative especially when married up
with BeyondCompare for handling file comparison.
