Alternatives to EOL extension

Well, yes, but doesn't that force users that start a new project (that 
is kept in Mercurial) to either rely on spotless manual inspection of 
line endings (probably very unreliable and prone to errors), or to come 
up with a checker script (simple as it may be) as one of the first steps 
near the beginning of the project?

I think that both options are alright, but I wished that the related 
wiki page was clearer and more concrete about them (and maybe there are 
more?).
