Alternatives to EOL extension

Yes, this is why I've been wondering and intended to explore if other than

   - manual inspection (error prone),
   - a custom script (extra effort, not Mercurial's business) and
   - the EOL extension (last resort)

there are other alternatives that are better in one way or another...
