It won't fix this mysterious-almost-certainly-nothing-to-do-with-hg

That's backwards? Odd that it'd be exactly a year apart in any case.

Yeah, not surprising. Just making sure the files themselves aren't being
replaced.

You should run hg verify on your repository and do any other sort of
integrity checks you can on your filesystem. Things are Not Right™.
