Sorry for the delay.  I didn't subscribe originally, as I'm not fond of 
mail lists -- can they move this to a proper web forum instead? You 
can't reply to an archived message. :-(

In any case, thanks for the responses.   Mykola: good to hear about your 
travails with MercurialEclipse.  I still haven't heard why the UI code 
for Egit can't be factored out.  The Egit folks obviously aren't 
interested in doing so.  Had I time to work on yet another project...
