That sounds interesting. The reason for this new feature is to improve
compatibility with git? [1]

Once this feature is implemented and  released I might be forced to
upgrade.

I still use 3.0.1 as be found in
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mercurial-ppa/releases/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/mercurial-ppa/releases/ubuntu lucid main

and I am thinking to upgrade to 3.3.1 provided by 

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tortoisehg-ppa/releases/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tortoisehg-ppa/releases/ubuntu lucid main

But this is a different subject.

[1] I have some repos, which are under git but I access them via the
    git-hg plugin. Fortunately these repo do not have branching (yet).
