Why don't you just try the "mq" extension?   It gives you the ability to
create patches, apply or unapply them without deleting them, pull in the
latest changes to the unaltered repository  and then re-apply your patch
to see  whether or not  it still fits.   And -- the patch  in the  ".hg/
patches/" directory  already is in a  "diff"  format  understood  by the
"patch" command, that is,  it is ready for being sent  to the maintainer
via e-mail.
