could not load Subversion python bindings

(I finally found a very old repository I'd been looking for...)
I'm getting these errors from 'hg', so I'm starting here. Is there a way
to get more info from mercurial about why this load failed. I earlier
saw "*** failed to import extension ..." when my hgrc had an error and
that went away and now I see a bunch of .pyc files. So the load must be
getting started.
Any help in tracking this down appreciated. I followed instructions from
Tortoisehg to download the extension and will check there next.
