Yes, it did not help.

Funny to note that if I use in MacOS the bash shell, the setting

export LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

In .bashrc does the right thing

Frankly MacOs is less unix than I thought.
